To The Other Side of Dreaming

our new home

dear mia,

the landlord picked us!!!!! we have a HOME!

in two weeks, moya and yolo will fly out to be with you and help you move into the new home. in a month, i will move to the bay and live with my friend patty who is making space in her life to do intergenerational skillshares with me around crip life skills (managing PAs, staying safe, running a home when i need others to do the physical work, etc.) after that, i will move in with you and we, who have not even shared a hotel room together, will learn to live with each other in what is technically a one-bedroom in-law cottage.

can you believe it?!!

i laughed skeptically when you wrote of wanting a landlord that understood disability in our first letter we shared, but it has actually happened. one of our landlords has YOUR disability and the other one is a remodeling contractor who truly understands and cares about access.

everything we spoke of wanting has come true this week. community support. financial support. a home with lots of light. a garden with cherrie trees, plums, avocado, aloe, oregano. an affordable place. an accessible place. warmth. coziness. privacy. home. i know we still have to build ramps everywhere, but i can’t help but think of the sliding doors and the automatic gate opener and think that this cottage was made for me. my body.

i heard it takes able-bodied people three months to find housing like this in the bay, but you only moved there in november and we already have a place. a place that a friend found through craigslist that wasn’t even listed as accessible or anything. i believe in the power of the universe and i believe in the power of praying grandmothers. this is evidence.

so ecstatic. i am ready to begin the new year by creating home with you!!

love,

stacey
